Overview: Purpose and Requirements

The Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) administers Georgia Tech's Learning Support Program. Students requiring learning support for Math or English must register for and successfully complete the non-academic credit Learning Support Courses (specified below) in the same semester in which they take MATH 1111 (College Algebra) and/or ENGL 1101 (English Composition I).

Students with standardized test scores earned via the SAT* (Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing and Math) or ACT* (English and Math) that are below the specified thresholds will be required to complete the non-credit Learning Support Course(s):

  • English Learning Support Course: 480 on the SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Section or 17 on the ACT English
  • Math Learning Support Course: 530 on the SAT Math Section or 21 on the ACT Math

*Georgia Tech will consider the higher of the SAT and ACT scores in determining whether a student is required to complete the Learning Support Course(s).

Students who are required to complete the Learning Support Course(s) will be notified in writing by Georgia Tech's Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Learning Support Courses: Descriptions and Academic Status

Students required to take the English Learning Support Course must register for ENGL 0999 (Support for English Composition), a three-hour, non-academic credit course designed to reinforce critical reading and communications concepts. Students in the Learning Support Program must complete ENGL 0999 in the same semester(s) in which they are enrolled in ENGL 1101 (English Composition I), a three-hour course.

Students required to take the Math Learning Support Course must register for MATH 0999 (Support for College Algebra), a two-hour, non-academic credit course designed to reinforce basic mathematical concepts. Students in the Learning Support Program must complete MATH 0999 in the same semester(s) in which they are enrolled in MATH 1111 (College Algebra), a four-hour course.

MATH 0999 and ENGL 0999 are not college level classes and cannot be applied to degree requirements, including free electives. Consequently, the grades earned in ENGL 0999 & MATH 0999 do not impact a student’s institutional GPA. However, grades earned in ENGL 0999 and MATH 0999 are part of the student’s permanent institutional record and may impact financial calculations and satisfactory academic progress.

Learning Support Course Descriptions

ENGL 0999: Taken with ENGL 1101, this is a composition course focusing on skills required for effective writing in a variety of contexts, with emphasis on exposition, analysis, and argumentation, and also including introductory use of a variety of research skills.

MATH 0999: Taken with MATH 1111, this course provides an in-depth study of the properties of algebraic, exponential and logarithmic functions as needed for calculus. Emphasis is on using algebraic and graphical techniques for solving problems involving linear, quadratic, piece-wise defined, rational, polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions.

Grading and Co-Requisite Guidelines

Students required to complete Learning Support Course(s) who do not pass ENGL 1101 and/or MATH 1111 with a grade of D or better will be required to re-take both the Learning Support Course(s) and the college level course(s) (ENGL 1101 and/or MATH 1111), regardless of the grade they received in co-requisite course(s).

Students will continue to take the combination(s) of courses until they have passed the college level course(s), ENGL 1101 and/or MATH 1111, with grade of D or better. There is no limit to the number of times the course(s) and the corresponding Learning Support Course(s) may be attempted. Assigned grades in the Learning Support Course(s) (MATH and ENGL 0999) may be A,B,C, and F, but a grade of D may not be assigned.

MATH 1111 may be taken as Pass/Fail, with a course grade of S exiting the student from Leaning Support Math.

Additional Notes and Resources

  • The Learning Support Program requirements must be completed as soon as possible after arriving at Georgia Tech. Thus, students and their academic advisors should work together to plan to complete the Learning Support requirements.
  • Georgia Tech’s Learning Support Coordinator will collaborate with academic advisors to monitor completion of requirements. The Registrar's Office may pre-register students who do not register for their required Learning Support Course(s).
  • The tuition for the Learning Support Course(s), MATH 0999 and ENGL 0999, is not covered by Zell Miller or HOPE scholarships. Other types of financial aid may pay for Learning Support Courses(s). Students should contact the Office of Financial Aid with questions regarding financial support for their Learning Support Course(s).
  • Beginning in the Summer 2023, students placed into MATH 1111 & MATH 0999 may attempt to satisfy these requirements by taking the ACCUPLACER Math examination. Details on the School of Math’s guidance for incoming students is available here.

The Georgia Tech Catalog includes full details on Learning Support policies. Questions or requests for more information should be directed to the Learning Support Coordinator, Beth Spencer, Ph. D., Director of Undergraduate Curricular Initiatives. (beth.spencer@gatech.edu).

Guideline #1

Students must pass ENGL 1101 or MATH 1111 to satisfy their learning support requirements in English and/or math, respectively. Students must earn a grade of D or better in ENGL 1101 and/or MATH 1111 to pass the course(s). Students must be enrolled in co-requisite ENGL 0999 and/or MATH 0999.

Guideline #2

Students who fail ENGL 1101 but pass ENGL 0999 are required to retake both ENGL 0999 and ENGL 1101. Students who fail MATH 1111 but pass MATH 0999 are required to retake both MATH 0999 and MATH 1111.

Guideline #3

Students who pass ENGL 1101 but fail ENGL 0999 may progress to ENGL 1102, having successfully completed learning support requirements in English. Students who pass MATH 1111 but fail MATH 0999 may progress to their next math course, having successfully completed learning support requirements in math.
